JPX Registers Futures Trading Volume Record in FY22 & March 2023

Japan Exchange Group, Inc. (JPX) released its trading overview for March 2023 and the full year 2022 (FY22), seeing a significant increase in total derivatives trading value for the month.

Cash Equity Market

In March 2023, the daily average trading value for the Prime Market (domestic common stocks) was JPY 3.4967 trillion, 10.8% higher than JPY 3.1564 trillion in the prior month.
The daily average trading value for the ETF market came in at JPY 236.5 billion, a great increase of 43.9% compared to JPY 164.4 billion in February 2023.

Derivatives Market
In March 2023, total derivatives trading volume was 40,723,827 contracts, jumping 83.1% compared to 22,236,443 contracts in February 2023.
Total derivatives trading value for the month reached JPY 390 trillion, increasing 134.9% compared to JPY 166 trillion in the previous month.
Trading volume for the night session and the ratio of the night session were 16,559,103 contracts and 40.7%, comparing to 9,201,596 contracts and 41.4% in the prior month.
In March 2023, trading volume for Nikkei 225 Weekly Options was 132,550 contracts and recorded historical high, and the trading volume for TOPIX Futures was 4,013,435 contracts and recorded the second highest.
Trading volume for TSE REIT Index Futures was 261,494 contracts and trading volume for TSE Bank Index Futures was 269,209 contracts, both of which were historical highs.
Total trading volume of the holiday trading on March 21 was 522,182 contracts. While in the prior month, the metrics came in at 352,578 contracts on February 23.
Cash Equity Market
In the year of 2022, daily average trading value for the Prime Market (domestic common stocks) reached JPY 3.2777 trillion.
In the ETF market, trading value was JPY 64.9157 trillion (daily average: JPY 265 billion).
Derivatives Market
In FY2022, total derivatives trading volume was 368,654,191 contracts.
In FY2022, total derivatives trading value reached 3,045 JPY trillion.
In FY2022, trading volume for the night session was 149,950,651 contracts. And the ratio of
the night session reached 40.7%, which recorded historical high.
In addition, trading volume for DJIA Futures, Nikkei 225 Weekly Options, Securities Options, TSE REIT Index Futures, TSE Bank Index Futures and Electricity Futures recorded historical high. And trading volume for TSE Mothers Index Futures was the second highest on record while Platinum mini futures was the third highest.
